Hundreds of demonstrators rallied in Abuja on October 20, 2025, calling for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra facing treason charges since his 2021 rendition from Kenya.
Security forces deployed tear gas and live rounds to disperse the crowds, leading to arrests of Kanu’s brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu and lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, multiple injuries, and severe traffic disruptions across the city.
Solidarity protests took place in Umuahia and Lagos, while pro-government groups countered by demanding Kanu face trial without interference, and rights organizations like Amnesty International condemned the crackdown on peaceful assembly.
