Cameroon Opposition Leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary Claims Victory Over Paul Biya’s 43-Year Rule

In Cameroon’s October 12 presidential election, opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary declared victory based on parallel tallies showing leads in urban centers like Douala and diaspora communities, challenging 92-year-old incumbent Paul Biya’s bid for an eighth term after 43 years in power.

Protests broke out in northern towns such as Agarwa and abroad in cities including Abidjan, Paris, and Nairobi following allegations of vote rigging, leading to clashes with security forces.

Official results from the Constitutional Council are pending within 15 days, amid international observers’ concerns over voter access and ballot integrity in the nation of 28 million.
