Mohbad: Demands for justice heighten, DSS joins probe as youths protest

Investigation into the death of music star Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (a.k.a Mohbad) took a fresh dimension yesterday as the Lagos State governor and other prominent personalities waded into the matter, demanding that justice be served and the issue not swept under the carpet.

Indeed, the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, said the Department of State Services (DSS) have joined the investigation into the death of music star Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (a.k.a Mohbad).

The governor said the intention was to boost and widen the dragnet with inter-agency collaboration and use of best technology to unearth the truth.

Sanwo-Olu had earlier directed the police in the state to launch a major investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the young star.

Consequently, the police on Monday, inaugurated a 19-man panel to unravel the mystery of the musician’s death. But, in a statement by the Commissioner of Information & Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the governor widened the investigation by inviting the DSS to assist in the quest to get justice for the youngster, his family and teeming fans.

Sanwo-Olu noted the developments that have followed the death of music star, and pleaded with all those who may have vital information that may assist the investigation process to avail such to the probe team.

He said: “We feel the pains of losing such a talented and promising young man, who made a name for himself in a highly competitive industry. May the Almighty grant his soul rest and comfort his bereaved family and fans.

“The government appeals to all friends and fans of the deceased to stay calm and refrain from making inflammatory utterances and reaching prejudicial conclusions on this matter.

“Staying calm and following the process keenly will be our most solemn tribute to the memory of the departed talent.

“Besides, the grieving family should be allowed to mourn their loss in peace. It is, indeed, a difficult time for us all – the government, the family and Mohbad’s fans.

“Any action that can aggravate the grief should be avoided. The Police and the DSS have been admonished to brief the public on their efforts periodically.”

Besides, Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has promised that the state will assist the family in taking care of the child of the late singer.

He spoke during a condolence visit to the mother of the deceased music star. Hamzat assured Mohbad’s family that Justice would be done on this matter.

MEANWHILE, a radio station in Ibadan, Oyo State, Splash FM 105.5, has banned the songs of Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley.

A presenter in the station, Aderonke Adesola, said through an X post that the management placed an indefinite ban on the songs of the CEO of Marlian Records.

According to her, Naira Marley’s songs have been placed on “Not to Be Broadcast” on the radio frequency by the station’s management.

“In view of the sensitive nature around the death of Mohbad and the criminal procedure, which the police have commenced, I will urge us all to exercise discretion.

“To this effect, Naira Marley’s songs now have Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB) on our station till further notice. This is with immediate effect. Thank you,” the post reads.

Naira Marley, who parted ways with MohBad in 2022, has been alleged to be connected with the death of his former signee. But he has denied the allegation.

ALSO, some youths in the Panseke area of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, yesterday, stormed the streets to demand justice for the death of the popular musician, who died last Tuesday.

The youths gathered in their numbers at the skating ground arena in Abeokuta wearing black and carrying placards with inscriptions such as #JusticeForMohbad, #Who off Light among others.

The protest, which was marked by chants and calls for justice, aimed to draw attention to the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s demise and to seek justice.

Organised by concerned youths and fans of the late artist, who donned black attire, the protest kicked off at the popular NEPA roundabout, after which they marched through the Oba Adesida road-Cathedral intersection before proceeding to Arakale route.

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has called for justice for the late music star. The governor said justice could only come through a thorough investigation of the circumstances leading to his death as well as various revelations that came out thereafter.

Oyebanji, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Yinka Oyebode, urged the police authorities to immediately unravel the mysteries surrounding the death of Mohbad

He spoke just as youths planned to hold a procession in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital to mourn the late Singer and demand justice for him.

Describing Mohbad as a talented singer believed to have hailed from Ekiti State, who at 27 had already carved a niche for himself in the entertainment world with several hit songs to his credit, Oyebanji said the death of the singer at the peak of his career and the circumstances surrounding it are highly regrettable.

ALSO, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has demanded an Inquest into the death of the late musician. Falana made the demand following the controversial demise of the musician, who died on September 12, and was laid to rest the next day. The lawyer’s request for a coroner inquest was contained in a letter to the Chief Coroner, High Court of Lagos State in Ikeja.
