Joker Star Isn’t Allowed to Talk About the Sequel

Joker: Folie à Deux actor Zazie Beetz confirms that she isn’t allowed to discuss the upcoming sequel in an attempt to avoid potential spoilers.

Atlanta vet Zazie Beetz, who is reprising her role as Sophie Dumond in Joker: Folie à Deux, addressed her involvement in the upcoming DC Studios sequel.

In Todd Phillips’ acclaimed 2019 film Joker, Sophie Dumond is introduced as the single mother neighbor of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Flex, who fantasizes about being in a romantic relationship with her. It’s unclear how Sophie will factor in Arthur’s storyline in the sequel since the titular criminal will gain a new love interest in Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn. When asked about her return in Joker: Folie à Deux during her interview with Inverse, Beetz confirmed that she had been instructed beforehand not to discuss anything regarding the sequel, “I was just told that I cannot speak on Joker, so unfortunately I can’t give you any tidbits,” she said. “But I think there’s a lot of talent on that set.”

Joker 2 is being described as a “musical sequel,” centering around the romance between Arkham Asylum doctor Harleen Quinzel and her patient Arthur Fleck. In a previous interview, Beetz teased that the sequel will surprise fans, as it won’t be what they expect. Before the movie wrapped production in April, a set video featuring Lady Gaga in a familiar location surfaced online, in which she can be seen performing her own musical number at the same staircase where Arthur famously danced in the 2019 film.
